Mother's day jewellery

Jewellery- If your mother is someone who likes to accessorize and is definitely a woman who loves to make a statement with her accessories then you should definitely look into making jewellery for her. Why not flex your creative muscles and try creating her a unique piece? By making the jewellery yourself, you would be sure to cater it to her liking and personality and possibly even save yourself the hassle to get somebody to cater the piece to her liking. You can make jewellery ranging from anklets to even a beaded head crown. Whatever it is, let your imagination run wild, who knows, it may end up being a side hustle for you.

Mother's day home decor

Customized home décor pieces – Now, we all know or possibly even have a mother that is absolutely obsessed with home décor. You know exactly what we are talking about, that mother who goes on the road to get Sardines or some other food item and ends up coming home with another figurine even though the house has like ten thousand of them. If you have a mother like that then you can look into getting or making her a customized home décor piece. This can be pillows that you stitch a quote or song lyric on, a hand-painted coaster because she is a tea or coffee fanatic, a small canvas painting from your friend’s business, or even a paper flower bouquet for her dresser. Once home décor excites your mother then this is sure to be the gift you should get her.

Create a mother’s day coupon box –A mother’s day coupon box is basically a small box that you could make with cardboard, construction paper, cartridge paper or you can just use an old box that you are no longer using that is filled with cards that you can also make with flashcards, etc. that have instructions on them. For example, your coupon box could include help with dinner, do the laundry, breakfast in bed, spa day and your mother can easily give you the coupon and you do what the instruction says. You can even pair this gift with something else on the list, I am sure she would love it.

Mother's day face mask

Make a homemade face mask or scrub – All you have to do is research ingredients for face masks and create one for her skin. I would recommend a soothing cucumber aloe mask to help calm her from all the stresses of her daily life.

Mother's day playlist

Make her a playlist – One of the biggest instant mood boosters is listening to music. If you want a gift that puts your mother in a good mood or reminds her of different eras in her life that brought her good memories, then create a playlist. Click here Mother's Day Playlist to get some inspiration for songs for her playlist.

Wake up early and do a surprise post-it notes mirror or a wall filled with affirmations- This is possibly one of the easiest and most affordable gifts you can give your mom. All you have to do is buy about 2 packs of sticky notes and write as many affirmations as you can on all of the sticky notes then while she sleeps, you stick them on the mirror. You can stick them in a heart. I guarantee you that she will be beyond surprised and most of all, they won’t stain the mirror or wall.

Make a 52 reasons why I love you flashcard set with a card deck- This would be an ideal gift that she can not only read over and over when she is having a bad day but if she loves to play games or played a lot of games as a child then this can be nostalgic for her.

Mother's day movie binge

A special movie day binge – This one is for the movie lover moms. The moms who lived on Netflix during the lockdowns. The moms would just randomly go to the movie theatre on a Sunday evening after cooking the whole family dinner. You can create a movie tickets graphic, send it to your mother and then have a small movie bar with all of her favourite snacks and candy. You can even go even further to make it more special by having some of her favourite movies on the list of movies to watch.

Mama Liked the Roses – Elvis Presley

The King of Rock and Roll and the heartthrob of the 1950s through to the 60s, Elvis Presley released a soulful and resounding song dedicated to his mother, who had passed away. Presley, who had a very close relationship with his mother, wrote the song in her honor, and it remains a touching sentiment of a son’s love for his mother. Presley’s iconic vocals and raw emotions in the song make this single a good choice for your mother’s day playlist.

Dear Mama – Tupac

No relationship is perfect, even the ones we have with our mothers and rapper Tupac speaks about this in his song Dear Mama. A more upbeat choice than the others, if your mother has a love for reggae and/or Shaggy, then this song is one to consider. A song dedicated to the powerful, caring, and beautiful women all around the world, the song will put a smile on your mother’s face when she hears this one being played for her.

Mama – Garnett Silk

Garnett Silk’s love for his mother is undoubtedly strong, and this song is just one of the ways he told the world. Mama has all the nostalgic reggae feel, and it is a great addition to your mother’s day playlist with its impactful and meaningful lyrics. The strength of the song becomes even more apparent with you remember that Garnett Silk passed away at age 28 while trying to save his mother from a burning building. May he rest in peace; his song immortalized as a son’s love and dedication to his mother.

Thank You Mama – Sizzla

If there was ever a song that truly encapsulates your love and appreciation for your mother, then Sizzla’s Thank You Mama truly hits the nail on the head. The smooth rendition finds the perfect words to express the struggles of a mother and the appreciation from a child and is an instant classic for the genre. This song is a must-have to have when you go about creating that perfect playlist.

energy management

Energy Management for Creatives

Energy, a powerful yet underrated word, and definitely energy management is underrated as well. Did you know that almost everything that you do requires energy including basic things such as bathing, sleeping, and eating? Did you know that managing your energy gives you more time to achieve things? At this point, you must be asking, how do I even go about managing my energy as a creative. Well, I am here to tell you a few ways you can do this and its importance.

Energy Management is deciding where to allocate your energy and what gets your energy. In essence, it involves a large amount of self-awareness. Energy Management is important as it aids in cultivating proper habits, promotes self-care as you will find that you have more time to ensure that you take care of yourself, increases your efficiency as you will feel less tired, and most importantly boosts your creative juices. Oftentimes, creative blocks come from a lack of motivation which is often linked to being low on energy. We all know that being creative takes up a lot of our time, so how do we manage our energy for better creative efficiency? Here are 5 tips:

Check-in with yourself
– Take the time to sit down and acknowledge how you truly feel and be honest about it. This will help you to recognize how important your energy is and what type of things need your energy and things that don’t. Segment your energy in these categories: Physical, Emotional, Spiritual, and Mental. Make a list of what you recognize gives you energy and drains your energy, limit what drains your energy and maximize what gives you energy in these categories, and do more of it.

Recognize that your energy is NOT as constant as time – There are several factors that can affect your energy but we all have the same 24 hours in a day. In order for you to have energy, it is important that you recognize when you are at your peak when you have the most energy and maximize on that. Likewise, when you feel as if you have no energy, REST. We tend to have a culture where we glamourize sleepless nights, if you do not absolutely need to have a sleepless night, REST. Remember, health is way more important than wealth and you are no good to anybody else if you are no good to anyone else.

Take note of how your creative process – Everyone’s creative process is different. Therefore, it is important to note what makes you feel at your best during your creative process. If you realize that when you are in your creative process, you forget to drink water and water helps to give you energy, then ensure that the next time you are ready to create, you have bottles of water near you. If you realize that you feel more creatively in tune when you have a shower versus when you do not have one, then ensure you take a shower once you can before creating. Whether we believe it or not, it is often these simple things that make a difference in how and what we create.

Allow yourself to feel how you feel- Contrary to popular belief, you do not NEED to be on all the time. If you do not feel like creating today or for the entire week, allow yourself to feel these emotions. You do not need to rush yourself to feel happy. Tek time wid yuhself.

Note your journey and put yourself first – Whether you want to accept it or not, you are not good to anyone else if you are no good to yourself. Ensure that you are doing this for yourself and make note of your new energy management journey. This will help you to gain more motivation, knowing that you are in control of yourself and your creativity.

A Letter to Creative Women

Dear Queen:

I see you. You have so many ideas, you want to be a trailblazer, you want to evoke emotions through your work but you feel as if there is no space for you. You self-reject and feel as if your work is not good enough. What if I told you that you have a space in this world? That your ideas are more than good enough to create change, make an impact, and will be passed on to generations? Probably if I told you, you would not believe me but what if you just believed yourself? Why can’t you do it? Why not show the world the royal energy that lives within you? If you ever felt as if you were not creative and you are not doing enough, you are. I hope that this letter serves as a reminder to you to let you know that none of your accomplishments and your dreams are too big for you, I hope this letter makes you know that space is there for you once you take the step to create it.

Please do not feel as if you need to ever rush to create or as if time is running out on you. Do not be hard on yourself, you are doing the best that can do with what you have.

I urge you to execute those plans you have always envisioned, prove to yourself that you are indeed talented, never give in to naysayers (remember, they may just be scared that you may succeed at doing it).

Finally, remember to be your biggest fan. There will always be room for improvement and as you grow and evolve, your work will too, support yourself along the way and celebrate the fact that you took the step to begin your creative journey. You are going to do amazing and achieve everything you set out to.

5 movies

5 Movies Every Creative Should Watch

Action, Comedy, Romance, Sci-Fi, Documentaries, Animated and the list could go on forever. Today, we are talking movies, Yes movies! I am just as excited as you are. Cue the 20th Century Fox movie intro, grab your popcorn and enjoy this article. Here are 5 movies that every creative should watch.

Disclaimer: These are in no specific order. This list was chosen by asking a number of creatives about movies which sparked a sense of creativity in them or inspired them to continue on their journeys, below are the top 5 most popular answers.

The Hate U Give (2018)

The Hate U Give

The Hate You Give was released in 2018. It focuses on a teenager, Starr Carter who is faced with immense pressure from many individuals when she tries to stand up for what is right after witnessing the unfair shooting of her best friend. The movie highlights the struggle to stand for what you believe when everyone else seems to be against it. This movie is one to watch because it inspires revolution, standing up for change, believing in your vision and not being swayed by the fear of others. It is important as a creative to stand firm in what we believe in and fight for change. This movie will inspire you to do just that!

The Pursuit of Happyness (2006)

The Pursuit of Happyness

This movie is one of my personal favourites. This movie was released in 2006 and is a biographical film that showcases the life of Chris Gardener. Chris Gardener had lost all his life’s earnings after selling a product he invested in and has to take an unpaid internship at a brokerage firm. His wife also divorces him and he is left with custody of his son. The movie highlights the themes of determination, father and son relationships and conflict with yourself. From this movie, creatives can learn that true happiness is not found in assets or money, how to find encouragement and fulfilment from what you do even when others try to discourage you and finally, life will not always be perfect but the storms never last, everything has to come to an end.

The Color Purple (1985)

The Color Purple

Based on the book, this classic movie showcases the life of Cecile, a young black woman who gets impregnated by her father at 14 years old. The movie takes us on her life journey. We examine how she deals with her hardships in life. Creatives can draw multiple life lessons from this movie. Some of which include: how to find who you are regardless of your hardships and how to be confident in that, the importance of relationships and finding a true connection with those around us.

Frida (2002)

Frida

Frida, Frida, Frida. One of the most iconic artists to ever live. This 2002 biopic showcases the complex, colourful and intriguing life of Frida Kahlo, who was a Mexican painter. Aside from being taken on a journey of her life, we also get to see where Frida gains her inspiration. We learn a lot from her journey. We learn about relationships, that we can have more than one interests, where we can look for our inspiration and how to be unapologetically creative.

Us (2019)

Us

At this point, you’re probably wondering how a psychological horror film can be beneficial to you as a creative. I know it’s crazy but creativity can be drawn from different things in so many ways. If you don’t believe me, you can just google some of your favourite artists and their inspiration behind what they create. You will find that as a creative that you’re able to think deeply on a lot of things or even find a way to make something simple into something extraordinary just by putting your own little magic on it. Whatever it is, Us will definitely be a fun watch. This film analyses a family of four with the main focus being placed on the mother, Adelaide, who was haunted by a traumatic experience as a child and constantly fears that something bad might happen to her and her family. It turns out that she was not wrong, four masked strangers appear on her doorstep and reveals themselves as the family’s doppelgangers. Crazy right? What can you learn from this? As the film progresses you get to understand that often times we are in a constant fight with ourselves, whether to try and heal from certain situations or just to fight our own freedom in more ways than one, we oddly relate to both the normal family and the doppelgangers. This is definitely a film you have to watch more than once in order to see the various themes that the director alluded to. However, this film will definitely have your creative juices flowing.

Rock and Release: The Art of Self-Care

For many, Self-Care looks like a glass of wine and a spa day, for others, it may look like meditation, for some it may look like sleeping in late or binging their favourite T.V. shows. What if I told you that there are a million and more ways in which we can practice Self- Care? Yes!!! Self- Care is solely dependent on you!!! So, without further ado, let’s talk about Self- Care!!!

Importance of Self- Care

Nobody will ever know you like yourself. As simple and straightforward as that statement may be, many of us forget that Self-Care starts with ourselves. Self- Care is the process of looking after yourself in every single aspect that works best for you. Practicing Self- Care helps you to improve your productivity, uplifts your mood, improves your health and most importantly it serves as a type of motivation. When you feel good you tend to want to take on the world.

Why is Self- Care an art?

Art is so powerful that it cannot be placed inside a box. As a matter of fact, some of the best works of art came from thinking outside of the box. Both art and Self- Care help to connect you with yourself whether it may be finding out your passion or just understanding and learning more about who you are. So how is Self- Care an art? Well, art is a means of creation and expression, when you practice Self- Care you are expressing and creating methods for yourself to become better at a skill, improve on yourself, improve your health, create solutions to problems, generate ideas or just to feel good, which subsequently is one of the many reasons people partake in art.

How do I practice Self- Care?

Self-Care IS NOT Selfish. Do not feel guilty for taking time out for yourself and do not let anyone make you feel like it is not warranted or necessary. Taking time out to properly look after yourself is very important because you cannot help others or look out for others without looking out for yourself (you cannot pour from an empty cup).

Here are some steps you can take to properly practice the art of Self-Care:

  1. Determine why Self- Care is important to you. Self- Care looks different for everyone. Sometimes, we may get pressured into thinking that Self- Care ONLY looks like Yoga and tea when this is NOT the case. It could be important for you to destress or help improve your mental state. Nobody knows you better than you know yourself so take the time out of your day to think deeply on the benefits of Self- Care and what Self- Care looks like for you. This will help you to come up with unique ways to practice Self- Care.
  2. Write down a list of things you would like to gain from practicing Self-Care. This list can help you to come up with unique ways for your Self- Care practice. The list can include things such as to improve your mental health, to treat yourself, to practice self- love and so on.
  3. Create a Self- Care plan: A Self- Care plan is your own special way that you will be doing to take care of yourself. You can set specific times, dates and goals.
  4. Try out everything that piques your interest. There is no set way to take care of yourself, so have fun with it. If you always wanted to take a dance class, writing, or go to a paint and sip just to unwind. Do not focus on being perfect or whether you have two left feet; it is about destressing making yourself better.
  5. Cheer on yourself: Self- Care can be anything from drinking a smoothie to having a Movie day. Do not be hard on yourself for not having a perfect Self- Care routine. You are still amazing! Just by taking the interest to take care of yourself is something to be happy about.
